Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 pc-The Southern Sample
We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parametersfor the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in theHipparcos catalog within 40 pc of the Sun. Here we report on resultsfor 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These resultsinclude new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physicalparameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, andmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars inthis sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, anda table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature ofthe distribution of the chromospheric activity parameterlogR'HK depends strongly on the metallicity, andwe explore the nature of the ``low-metallicity'' chromosphericallyactive K-type dwarfs.

Chromospheric Ca II Emission in Nearby F, G, K, and M Stars
We present chromospheric Ca II H and K activity measurements, rotationperiods, and ages for ~1200 F, G, K, and M type main-sequence stars from~18,000 archival spectra taken at Keck and Lick Observatories as a partof the California and Carnegie Planet Search Project. We have calibratedour chromospheric S-values against the Mount Wilson chromosphericactivity data. From these measurements we have calculated medianactivity levels and derived R'HK, stellar ages,and rotation periods from general parameterizations for 1228 stars,~1000 of which have no previously published S-values. We also presentprecise time series of activity measurements for these stars.Based on observations obtained at Lick Observatory, which is operated bythe University of California, and on observations obtained at the W. M.Keck Observatory, which is operated jointly by the University ofCalifornia and the California Institute of Technology. The KeckObservatory was made possible by the generous financial support of theW. M. Keck Foundation.

Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 Study of the Trapezium Cluster: The Influence of Circumstellar Disks on the Initial Mass Function
We have performed the first measures of mass accretion rates in the coreof the Orion Nebula Cluster. Four adjacent fields centered on theTrapezium stars have been imaged in the U and B bands using the WideField Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Weobtained photometry for 91 stars in the U band (F336W) and 71 stars inthe B band (F439W). The WFPC2 archive was also searched to obtaincomplementary V-band (F547M) and I-band (F791W) photometry. In thispaper we focus our attention on a group of 40 stars with known spectraltypes and complete UBVI WFPC2 photometry. We locate each star on the H-Rdiagram, considering both the standard ISM reddening law withRV=3.1 and the ``anomalous'' reddening law withRV=5.5 more appropriate for the Orion Nebula. Then we derivethe stellar masses and ages by comparing with the evolutionary tracksand isochrones calculated by D'Antona & Mazzitelli and Palla &Stahler. Approximately three-quarters of the sources show excessluminosity in the U band, which we attribute to mass accretion. Theknown correlation between the U-band excess and the total accretionluminosity, recalibrated for our photometric system, allows us toestimate the accretion rates, which are all found to be in the range10-8 to 10-12 Msolar yr-1.For stars older than 1 Myr, there is some evidence of a relation betweenmass accretion rates and stellar age. Overall, mass accretion ratesappear lower than those measured by other authors in the Orion flankingfields or in Taurus-Auriga. Mass accretion rates remain low even in thevicinity of the 10-5 Msolar yr-1 birthline of Palla & Stahler, suggesting that in the core of theTrapezium cluster, disk accretion has been recently depressed by anexternal mechanism. We suggest that the UV radiation generated by theTrapezium OB stars, responsible for the disk evaporation, may also causethe drop of the mass accretion rate. In this scenario, low-mass starsmay terminate their pre-main-sequence evolution with masses lower thanthose they would have reached if disk accretion could have proceededundisturbed until the final disk consumption. In OB associations thelow-mass end of the initial mass function (IMF) may therefore beaffected by the rapid evolution of the most massive cluster's stars,causing a surplus of ``accretion-aborted,'' very low mass stars andbrown dwarfs and a deficit of intermediate-mass stars. This trend is inagreement with recent observations of the IMF in the Trapezium cluster.Based on observations taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope,which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research inAstronomy (AURA), Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555.

Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog
We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

Revised Coordinates and Proper Motions of the Stars in the Luyten Half-Second Catalog
We present refined coordinates and proper-motion data for the highproper-motion (HPM) stars in the Luyten Half-Second (LHS) catalog. Thepositional uncertainty in the original Luyten catalog is typicallygreater than 10" and is often greater than 30". We have used the digitalscans of the POSS I and POSS II plates to derive more accurate positionsand proper motions of the objects. Out of the 4470 candidates in the LHScatalog, 4323 objects were manually reidentified in the POSS I and POSSII scans. A small fraction of the stars were not found because of thelack of finder charts and digitized POSS II scans. The uncertainties inthe revised positions are typically ~2" but can be as high as ~8" in afew cases, which is a large improvement over the original data.Cross-correlation with the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos catalogs yielded 819candidates (with mR<~12). For these brighter sources, theposition and proper-motion data were replaced with the more accurateTycho-2/Hipparcos data. In total, we have revised proper-motionmeasurements and coordinates for 4040 stars and revised coordinates for4330 stars. The electronic version of the paper5 contains the updated information on all 4470stars in the LHS catalog.

Caby Photometry of the Hyades: Comparisons with the Field Stars
Intermediate-band photometry of the Hyades on the Caby system ispresented for dwarf stars ranging from spectral type A through late K. Amean (hk, b-y) relation is constructed using only single stars withoutanomalous atmospheres and is compared with the field stars of the solarneighborhood. For the F dwarfs, the Hyades relation defines anapproximate lower bound in the two-color diagram, consistent with an[Fe/H] between +0.10 and +0.15. These index-color diagrams follow thecommon convention of presenting stars with highest abundance at thebottom of the plot, although the index values for the metal-rich starsare numerically larger. For field F dwarfs in the range [Fe/H] between+0.4 and -1.0, [Fe/H]=-5.6δhk+0.125, with no evidence for a colordependence in the slope. For the G and K dwarfs, the Hyades meanrelation crosses the field star distribution in the two-color diagram,defining an approximate upper bound for the local disk stars. Starsfound above the Hyades stars fall in at least one of three categories:[Fe/H] below -0.7, [Fe/H] above that of the Hyades, or chromosphericallyactive. It is concluded that, contrary to the predictions of modelatmospheres, the hk index for cool dwarfs at a given color hits amaximum value for stars below solar composition and, with increasing[Fe/H] above some critical value, declines. This trend is consistent,however, with the predictions from synthetic indices based upon muchnarrower Ca filters, where the crossover is caused by the metallicitysensitivity of b-y.

The Palomar/MSU Nearby Star Spectroscopic Survey. III. Chromospheric Activity, M Dwarf Ages, and the Local Star Formation History
We present high-resolution echelle spectroscopy of 676 nearby M dwarfs.Our measurements include radial velocities, equivalent widths ofimportant chromospheric emission lines, and rotational velocities forrapidly rotating stars. We identify several distinct groups by theirHα properties and investigate variations in chromospheric activityamong early (M0-M2.5) and mid (M3-M6) dwarfs. Using a volume-limitedsample together with a relationship between age and chromosphericactivity, we show that the rate of star formation in the immediate solarneighborhood has been relatively constant over the last 4 Gyr. Inparticular, our results are inconsistent with recent large bursts ofstar formation. We use the correlation between Hα activity and ageas a function of color to set constraints on the properties of L and Tdwarf secondary components in binary systems. We also identify a numberof interesting stars, including rapid rotators, radial velocityvariables, and spectroscopic binaries. Observations were made at the 60inch telescope at Palomar Mountain, which is jointly owned by theCalifornia Institute of Technology and the Carnegie Institution ofWashington.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. Photometric Separation of Stellar Properties Using SDSS Filters
Using synthetic photometry of Kurucz model spectra, we explore thecolors of stars as a function of temperature, metallicity, and surfacegravity with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) filters, u'g'r'i'z'. Thesynthetic colors show qualitative agreement with the few publishedobservations in these filters. We find that the locus of synthetic starsis basically two-dimensional for 4500 < T < 8000 K, whichprecludes simultaneous color separation of the three basic stellarcharacteristics we consider. Colors including u' contain the mostinformation about normal stellar properties; measurements in this filterare also important for selecting white dwarfs. We identify two differentsubsets of the locus in which the loci separate by either metallicity orsurface gravity. For 0.5 < g' - r' < 0.8 (corresponding roughly toG stars), the locus separates by metallicity; for photometric error of afew percent, we estimate metallicity to within ~0.5 dex in this range.In the range -0.15 < g' - r' < 0.00 (corresponding roughly to Astars), the locus shows separation by surface gravity. In both cases, weshow that it is advantageous to use more than two colors whendetermining stellar properties by color. Strategic observations in SDSSfilters are required to resolve the source of a ~5% discrepancy betweensynthetic colors of Gunn-Stryker stars, Kurucz models, and externaldeterminations of the metallicities and surface gravities. The syntheticstar colors can be used to investigate the properties of any normal starand to construct analytic expressions for the photometric prediction ofstellar properties in special cases.

Infrared Colors at the Stellar/Substellar Boundary
We present new infrared JHK photometry for 61 halo and disk stars aroundthe stellar/substellar boundary. We also present new L' photometry for21 of these stars and for 40 low-mass stars taken from the Leggettphotometry compilation. These data are combined with available opticalphotometry and astrometric data to produce color-color and absolutemagnitude-color diagrams; the current sample extends the similar workpresented in the 1992 paper into more metal-poor and lower mass regimes.The disk and halo sequences are compared to the predictions of thelatest model atmospheres and structural models. We find good agreementbetween observation and theory except for known problems in the V and Hpassbands, probably due to incomplete molecular data for TiO, metalhydrides, and H_2O. The metal-poor M subdwarfs are well matched by themodels since oxide opacity sources are less important in this case. Theknown extreme M subdwarfs have metallicities about one-hundredth solar,and the coolest subdwarfs have T_eff ~ 3000 K with masses~0.09M/M_ȯ. The grainless models are not able to reproduce the fluxdistributions of disk objects with T_eff < 2500 K; however, apreliminary version of the NextGen-Dusty models that includeshomogeneous formation and extinction by dust grains is able to match thecolors of these very cool objects. The least luminous objects in thissample are GD 165B, three DENIS objects-DBD 0205, DBD 1058, and DBD1228-and Kelu-1. These have T_eff ~ 2000 K and are at or below thestellar limit with masses <=0.075M/M_ȯ. Photometry alone cannotconstrain these parameters further since the age is unknown, butpublished lithium detections for two of these objects (Kelu-1 and DBD1228) imply that they are young (aged about 1 Gyr) and substellar (mass<= 0.06M/M_ȯ).

New proper motion determination of Luyten catalogue stars (LTT) with declination between -5(deg) and -30(deg) and right ascension between 0h and 13h 30m
Data are given for 353 LTT stars found on 42 areas, covering 25 squaredegrees each, with declination between -5(deg) and -30(deg) and rightascension between 0h and 13h 30m. Astrometric positions of stars with high proper motions in the Southern Hemisphere
Several stars with large proper motions, cited by W.J. Luyten, wereincluded in the preliminary programme for the HIPPARCOS mission. Whenperforming preparatory measurements of plates, difficulties wereencountered in identifying certain of these stars when relying only onpublished coordinates. We have taken advantage of this work whichrelates to the southern sky in order to determine the astrometricposition of the greatest possible number of these objects, even forthose which were not included in the programme. Determination of effective temperatures for an extended sample of dwarfs and subdwarfs (F0-K5).
We have applied the InfraRed Flux Method (IRFM) to a sample of 475dwarfs and subdwarfs in order to derive their effective temperatureswith a mean accuracy of about 1.5%. We have used the new homogeneousgrid of theoretical model atmosphere flux distributions developed byKurucz (1991, 1993) for the application of the IRFM. The atmosphericparameters of the stars cover, roughly, the ranges:3500K<=T_eff_<=8000K -3.5<=[Fe/H]<=+0.53.5<=log(g)<=5. The monocromatic infrared fluxes at the continuum,and the bolometric fluxes are derived using recent results, whichsatisfy the accuracy requeriments of the work. Photometric calibrationshave been revised and applied to estimate metallicities, although directspectroscopic determinations were preferred when available. The adoptedinfrared absolute flux calibration, based on direct optical measurementsof angular stellar diameters, sets the effective temperatures determinedusing the IRFM on the same scale than those obtained by direct methods.We derive three temperatures, T_J_, T_H_ and T_K_, for each star usingthe monochromatic fluxes at different infrared wavelengths in thephotometric bands J, H, and K. They show good consistency over 4000 K,and no trend with wavelength may be appreciated. We provide a detaileddescription of the steps followed for the application of the IRFM, aswell as the sources of the errors associated to the different inputs ofthe method, and their transmission into the final temperatures. We alsoprovide comparison with previous works.

New proper-motion stars with declination between -5deg and -30deg and right ascension between 0h and 9h.
Data are given for 494 new stars with proper motion larger than 0.15arcsec/year found on 21 areas covering 25 square degrees each. These arelocated between -5deg and -30deg in declination and between 0h and 9h inright ascension. Photographic magnitudes range from 9.5 to 19.0. Eightstars have proper motions larger than 0.5 arcsec/year, in a magnituderange between 15.5 and 19.0.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Far infrared properties of late type dwarfs. Infrared fluxes of K & M dwarfs
IRAS fluxes/upper limits are presented for a large sample of K and Mdwarfs. Good agreement is found between the 12 micrometer fluxes andthose derived from the photospheric models of Mould (1976).Relationships between the optical and infrared colors are derived. Theactive dMe/dKe stars appear systematically brighter in the infraredcompared with the less active dM/dK stars, which could be attributed tomore efficient nonradiative heating in their atmosphere. Any systematicdifferences found in our results when compared with those obtained fromprevious studies are attributed to the different analysis packages used.

The importance of surface inhomogeneities for K and M dwarf chromospheric fluxes
We present published and archived spectroscopic and spectrophotometricdata of H-alpha, Ca II, Mg II, and X-rays for a large sample of K and Mdwarfs. The data set points to the importance that surfaceinhomogeneities have in the flux luminosity diagrams in these late-typedwarfs, irrespective of whether the Balmer lines are in emission orabsorption. Although supporting the fact that cooler stars exhibitincreasing levels of surface activity, evident through an increasingincidence of Balmer emission, surface inhomogeneities, or variations inthe local temperature and density structure, at the chromospheric level,dominate the total Ca II and Mg II fluxes. We show that the flux-fluxand luminosity-luminosity relations indicate differing extents ofinhomogeneity from the chromosphere through to the corona. A goodcorrelation between Ca II and Mg II fluxes indicates that they areformed in overlapping regions of the chromosphere, so that thecontribution of surface inhomogeneities is not evident from thisparticular flux-flux diagram. In the region of the upper chromospherethrough to the transition and corona, the correlation between Ly-alphaand X-ray fluxes indicates regions with similar levels of arealinhomogeneity. This appears to be uncorrelated with that at thechromospheric level.

Photometry of dwarf K and M stars
An observational program using UBVRI photometry is presented for 688stars from among the dwarf K and M stars already found spectroscopicallyby Vyssotsky (1958). Of these, 211 have not been observedphotometrically. These observations were obtained over a period ofseveral years at the Kitt Peak National Observatory using a GaAsphotomultiplier with an 0.9 m reflector. Based on night-to-nightvariations in the measures of individual stars, the internal errors maybe estimated to be roughly 0.01 mag for the colors and 0.015 for the Vmagnitudes. The photometric parallaxes reported for each star werecomputed in the manner discussed by Weis (1986).

Infrared colors of low-mass stars
A total of 322 red dwarf stars are studied in a review of IR IJHKphotometry to discern chromospheric activity and kinematic dataregarding metallicity effects in the IR color:color diagrams. Themetallicity variations are employed to assess changes in the H(-)continuum opacity and water-vapor characterizations. The stars areclassified in terms of metal-richness with five categories includingyoung disk, old disk, and halo types with attention given to the inverserelationship between metallicity and water-band absorption strength. Theresults include IR photometric parallax relations for each metallicitygroup and absolute magnitudes for single stars as well as temperatures,intrinsic colors, and spectral types. The body of data is useful forconstraining models of the interiors and atmospheres of this class ofstars.

Theoretical colours and isochrones for some Hubble Space Telescope colour systems. II
A grid of synthetic surface brightness magnitudes for 14 bandpasses ofthe Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Camera is presented, as well asa grid of UBV, uvby, and Faint Object Camera surface brightnessmagnitudes derived from the Gunn-Stryker spectrophotometric atlas. Thesynthetic colors are used to examine the transformations between theground-based Johnson UBV and Stromgren uvby systems and the Faint ObjectCamera UBV and uvby. Two new four-color systems, similar to theStromgren system, are proposed for the determination of abundance,temperature, and surface gravity. The synthetic colors are also used tocalculate color-magnitude isochrones from the list of theoretical tracksprovided by VandenBerg and Bell (1990). It is shown that by using theappropriate filters it is possible to minimize the dependence of thiscolor difference on metallicity. The effects of interstellar reddeningon various Faint Object Camera colors are analyzed as well as theobservational requirements for obtaining data of a given signal-to-noisefor each of the 14 bandpasses.

Chromospheric H-alpha and CA II lines in late-type stars
Observations of H-alpha and Ca II H and K in the chromospheres of 50main-sequence K and M stars are reported. The photospheric contributionto the integrated core flux in these lines is found to be more importantthan previously thought, and earlier estimates of the basal flux of cooldwarf stars are revised. The H-alpha data confirm the presence of bothan upper and a lower limit to the H-alpha equivalent width attained atany given spectral type. The maximum H-alpha absorption strengthdecreases gradually toward cooler stars while the maximum 'saturated'quiescent emission strength increases. The Ca II emission strength isrelated to the strength of the emission or absorption feature atH-alpha, but there is not a one-to-one correlation. The main results maybe explained in terms of photoionization and collisional control of thenon-LTE H-alpha source function. Several aspects of the structure andheating of the outer atmospheres of dwarf K and M stars are discussed.

BVRI photometry of the Gliese Catalogue stars
Photoelectri BVRI photometry on the Cousins (Kron-Cape) system has beenobtained for many of the southern faint stars in the Gliese Catalog(1969). This extends the work of Cousins (1980) and provides a uniformset of data for the nearby stars. Several red dwarfs are noted, whichwere used to define the red end of the Cousins system.

K- and M-type dwarf stars within 25 parsecs of the sun. I - The age-chromospheric activity relations from H-alpha equivalent widths
The available equivalent-width measurements of H-alpha in dwarf K and Mstars within 25 pc of the sun indicate that, as a chromosphericdiagnostic, the H-alpha decay rate is about t exp 0.5. The decay rate ofline emission in Mg II h and k (Ca II H and K) is about t exp 0.3. Thedecay rates are derived from observations of members of a few stellarsuperclusters and groups, for which the consistency of results arguesstrongly for the importance of more data. The only major inconsistencyencountered is for the unique HR 1614 group which, in theage/chromospheric-activity progression, gives different results from MgII h and k and from WH-alpha.

The infrared luminosity function for low-mass stars
IR observational luminosity functions are presented for M dwarfs towardsthe South Galactic Pole and the Hyades cluster. A compilation of VRIJHKdata is given for 200 parallax stars. Two-color NIR/IR diagrams of thedata are used to demonstrate metallicity and gravity effects. It isshown that I-J is the purest temperature color index. The corrections tothe luminosity functions that are necessary to allow for magnitudeerrors (Malmquist effects) are discussed. It is found that there is arise in the luminosity function and the mass function for stars in thesolar neighborhood with masses close to the hydrogen-burning limit.

Radial-velocity measures are presented for 225 stars, most of which aredwarf K and M stars. The data were obtained with the CfA digitalspeedometer, whose uncertainty is less than 1 km/s. Calibrations ofthree earlier radial-velocity studies and comparisons with three othercontemporary ones lead to the evaluation of the standard error for anindividual star as determined in each investigation. The data from twomasks, matching solar type and M type stars, form a ratio that measuresstellar surface temperature quite closely and appear to be useful indetecting the presence of unseen companions. A few previouslyunrecognized binaries have been detected; those with most certaintyinclude stars nos. 366B, 453, and 46A of the McCormick lists of dwarfstars.
