Nova V4444 Sagittarii 1999: Spectropolarimetric Evidence for a Preexisting Circumstellar Dust Cloud
We present the results of our optical spectropolarimetry of nova V4444Sagittarii 1999 in its early stage. The observations were performed onfour nights from 1999 April 29 (t=2 days) to 1999 May 7 (t=10 days). Thepolarization properties, including the absence of polarizationdifference across strong emission lines, have remained unchanged throughthe period. The observed polarization degree increases monotonicallytoward shorter wavelength. We separate the interstellar polarizationcomponent from the observed polarization by assuming that the componentintrinsic to this nova has a power-law-type function of wavelength. Thedecomposed intrinsic polarization can be explained by scattering due tosmall grains. These results suggest the preexistence of the dust cloudin the vicinity of the nova, at least several dozens of AU from thecentral star.

The 74th Special Name-list of Variable Stars
We present the Name-list introducing GCVS names for 3153 variable starsdiscovered by the Hipparcos mission.

UBV beta Database for Case-Hamburg Northern and Southern Luminous Stars
A database of photoelectric UBV beta photometry for stars listed in theCase-Hamburg northern and southern Milky Way luminous stars surveys hasbeen compiled from the original research literature. Consisting of over16,000 observations of some 7300 stars from over 500 sources, thisdatabase constitutes the most complete compilation of such photometryavailable for intrinsically luminous stars around the Galactic plane.Over 5000 stars listed in the Case-Hamburg surveys still lackfundamental photometric data.

The Tokyo PMC catalog 90-93: Catalog of positions of 6649 stars observed in 1990 through 1993 with Tokyo photoelectric meridian circle
The sixth annual catalog of the Tokyo Photoelectric Meridian Circle(PMC) is presented for 6649 stars which were observed at least two timesin January 1990 through March 1993. The mean positions of the starsobserved are given in the catalog at the corresponding mean epochs ofobservations of individual stars. The coordinates of the catalog arebased on the FK5 system, and referred to the equinox and equator ofJ2000.0. The mean local deviations of the observed positions from theFK5 catalog positions are constructed for the basic FK5 stars to comparewith those of the Tokyo PMC Catalog 89 and preliminary Hipparcos resultsof H30.

A spectroscopic database for Stephenson-Sanduleak Southern Luminous Stars
A database of published spectral classifications for objects in theStepenson-Sanduleak Luminous Stars in the Southern Milky Way catalog hasbeen compiled from the literature. A total of 6182 classifications for2562 stars from 139 sources are incorporated.

Far-ultraviolet stellar photometry: Fields in Sagittarius and Scorpius
Far-ultraviolet photometry for 741 objects in a field in Sagittariuscentered near M8 and 541 objects in a field centered near sigma Scorpiiis presented. These data were extracted from electographic imagesobtained with two cameras during a shuttle flight in 1991 April/May. Thecameras provided band passes with lambdaeff = 1375 A andlambdaeff = 1781 A. Synthetic colors show that these bandsare sensitive to effective temperature for hot stars. Our measurementswere placed on a quantitative far-ultraviolet magnitude scale byconvolving the spectra of stars observed by IUE with our cameras'spectral response functions. Fifty-eight percent of the ultravioletobjects were identified with visible stars using the SIMBAD databasewhile another 40% of the objects are blends of early type stars tooclose together to separate with our resolution. Our photometry iscompared with that from the TD-1, OAO 2, and ANS satellites and the S201(Apollo 16) far-ultraviolet camera and found to agree at the level of afew tenths of a magnitude. Unlike previous studies, almost half of theidentified visual counterparts to the ultraviolet objects are early Bstars. A plot of distance modulus against ultraviolet color excessreveals a significant population of stars with strong ultravioletexcess.

KPNO lunar occultation summary. II
The results from 65 lunar occultation observations between August 1984and July 1986 are discussed. The instrumentation and reductionprocedures used in the study are described. Parameters are given fornine different double/multiple stars and for two stars with measurableangular diameters. Three newly discovered double stars, SAO 77310, SAO79241, and the brighter component of SAO 77837, are examined. Inaddition, a fourth star, the brighter component of SAO 76862, isresolved for the first time.

HD 207739 and other F + Be variables
Characteristics for a group of composite spectrum stars which havestrong H alpha emission and peculiar satellite UV spectra are compared.Spectroscopic periods and photometric variability are discussed.Compared with normal noninteracting composite spectrum binaries, theyexhibit excess flux in the middle UV region. This is believed toindicate the presence of an accretion disk.

Strange F + Be binary star systems
The IUE spectra of five stars with F or F + B optical spectra and strongBe star-like H alpha emission were obtained on several dates. No twoexposures of the strange optical variable HD 37453 are quite alike, MgII emission is strong, and the short wave prime (SWP) region has someresemblance to known interacting binaries such as SX Cas. The HD 43246shows significant Si IV absorption against an otherwise normal lateB-spectrum. The HD 166612 shows early B main-sequence spectral featuresexcept for evidence of a strong stellar wind. The HD 207739, discoveredin 1982 to show UV characteristics of a strongly interacting system, showed general brightening in the September observations, opposite tothe visual flux which decreased slightly. The far-UV spectrum of HD207739 was seen to evolve but to remain in between the two extremes seenin 1982, which differed greatly both in character and in absolute flux.

UBV photometry for southern OB stars
New UBV photometry of 1227 OB stars in the southern Milky Way ispresented. For 1113 of these stars, MK spectral types have been reportedpreviously in a comprehensive survey to B = 10.0 mag.

UBV-/H-beta/ photometry of luminous stars between L equals 335 deg and L equals 6 deg
Results are reported for photoelectric UBV and H-beta photometry of 316luminous OB stars and early-type supergiants in the region between 335and 6 deg galactic longitude. UBV magnitudes for the 316 stars and betaindexes for 37 of them are presented. Absolute magnitudes, distances, and color excesses are determined for the 161 stars with measured betaindexes or known MK spectral types. The results are discussed in termsof the spiral structure of the Galaxy. From the data obtained forprogram stars assumed to be cluster members, distances are derived forthe open clusters NGC 6167 (1.7 kpc), NGC 6193 (1.3 kpc), Hogg 22 (2.0kpc), NGC 6231 (1.9 kpc), and Tr 27 (1.6 kpc).

Estimation of spectral classifications for bright southern stars with interesting Stromgren indices
This paper investigates the degree of success with which uvby photometrycan be applied to predict spectral classifications for 947 A, F, and Gstars brighter than an apparent magnitude of 8.3 and with four-colorindices indicating some kind of interesting, unusual, or peculiarspectrum. One or several possible spectral classifications are estimatedfor each star from photometry alone, double stars are distinguished, andthe estimates are compared with published classifications. The resultsshow that the framework provided by uvby photometry can be extended toinclude most G and K stars, reddened stars, peculiar stars, and certaintypes of double star.

Spectral types of stars with unusual photometric indices
The Kitt Peak 2.1-m Cassegrain spectrograph was used to obtain spectraof 92 A5-G0 stars measured by Olsen in the Stromgren four-color systemand predicted to be abnormal in the sense of excessive reddening, highluminosity, or abnormal composition. Of the five stars predicted to bereddened B or A stars, four were indeed such while for the fifth Olsenobserved the blended components. Of twelve stars predicted to besupergiants, one is a supergiant, four are giants, two are subgiants, three are Ap stars, and two are Am stars. Thus photometrically predictedsupergiants are actually stars above main sequence in two out of threecases but mostly much less luminous than expected. Of ten predictedweak-lined stars, only two were found to be really so. Am stars werewell predicted, though detection is contaminated with Ap and luminousstars. It is concluded that four-color photometry is useful in selectinginteresting stars, but is often unable to tell the specific type ofabnormality present.
