The RCW 114 nebula: An old supernova remnant or a WR wind-blown bubble?
We present medium resolution spectra (R ~ 7 km s-1) of theinterstellar NaI D1 & D2 absorption lines observed towards 7early-type stars with distances ranging from 221 to ~ 1.5 kpc in theline-of-sight to the RCW 114 nebula. Our observed pattern of absorptionis in conflict with the findings of Bedford et al. (1984) who placed anupper limit to the distance to this nebula of <200 pc. Instead, ourspectral data are consistent with a marked increase in NaI absorptioncomplexity occuring only for sight-lines with distances >1 kpc. Asimilar pattern of absorption behavior is seen for the SiII lambda 1304Å interstellar line observed in the ultraviolet towards four ofthe aforementioned stars. We propose a scenario in which the absorptioncomponents with velocities <-10 km s-1 seen towards RCW114 are caused by an expanding stellar wind-blown bubble associated withthe Wolf-Rayet (WR) star, HD 156385 (d ~ 1.5 kpc), and that theHα and [SII] nebular emission probably arises in shockedfilamentary gas associated with a pre-existing evolved supernova remnantcavity produced by the high-mass progenitor of the present WR star.

Far-ultraviolet stellar photometry: Fields in Sagittarius and Scorpius
Far-ultraviolet photometry for 741 objects in a field in Sagittariuscentered near M8 and 541 objects in a field centered near sigma Scorpiiis presented. These data were extracted from electographic imagesobtained with two cameras during a shuttle flight in 1991 April/May. Thecameras provided band passes with lambdaeff = 1375 A andlambdaeff = 1781 A. Synthetic colors show that these bandsare sensitive to effective temperature for hot stars. Our measurementswere placed on a quantitative far-ultraviolet magnitude scale byconvolving the spectra of stars observed by IUE with our cameras'spectral response functions. Fifty-eight percent of the ultravioletobjects were identified with visible stars using the SIMBAD databasewhile another 40% of the objects are blends of early type stars tooclose together to separate with our resolution. Our photometry iscompared with that from the TD-1, OAO 2, and ANS satellites and the S201(Apollo 16) far-ultraviolet camera and found to agree at the level of afew tenths of a magnitude. Unlike previous studies, almost half of theidentified visual counterparts to the ultraviolet objects are early Bstars. A plot of distance modulus against ultraviolet color excessreveals a significant population of stars with strong ultravioletexcess.

CCD astrometry and instrumental Delta-V photometry of wide visual double stars. III - Differential measurements of often observed southern pairs
We present accurate relative positions and instrumental visual (BesselV) magnitude differences of southern wide star components. The meanaccuracy of the angular separation is 0.02 arcsecs, which corresponds to1.5 micron on the CCD chip, and of magnitude difference 0.007mag/exposure. The program pairs are targets of the HIPPARCOS mission andthey have been observed at least four times in the last 150 yrs.

Secondary UVBY standards in the Harvard E-regions
Photoelectric uvby photometry for 201 stars which are already UBV (RI)cstandards is presented. The photoelectric data are closely tied to theCousins uvby standards and the stars should be suitable for use asfainter (7-11 mag) secondary standards.

A photometric study of wide visual double stars with significant relative proper motion
Photometric observations and uvby H-beta indices of 142 wide visualdouble stars are presented. Calibrations of the indices are used toderive MK class, color excess, absolute magnitude, effectivetemperature, and distance. The results are used to check candidatesdouble stars for the Hipparcos mission for opticity.

Secondary standards for the Stromgren UVBY system
Observations of 158 E region stars have been made in the Stromgrensystem, using the 46-cm reflector at Cape Town. They are mostly brighterthan eighth magnitude and are intended for use as secondary standardsfor the four-color system. The E region relative zero points are definedwith a precision of + or - 0.001 mag, and the internal standard errorsof the colors life between + or - 0.001 and + or - 0.002 mag.

Five-colour photometry of early-type stars in the direction of galactic X-ray sources
The results of five-color (Walraven system) photometry of 551 O- andB-type stars located in 17 fields of a few square degrees aroundgalactic X-ray sources are presented. From a comparison ofreddening-free combinations of color indices with theoretical values,calculated for model atmospheres of Kurucz (1979), effective temperatureand surface gravity for these stars are derived. In addition theirabsolute magnitude are determined by combining these parameters with theresults of evolutionary calculations of massive stars. These effectivetemperatures are in good agreement with the temperature scale ofBohm-Vitense (1981) for stars of luminosity classes II to V. For thesupergiants the effective temperatures are about 40 percent higher. Forstars of luminosity classes III to V the absolute magnitudes agree wellwith the results of independent luminosity calibrations of spectraltypes, but for brighter stars they deviate systematically. Thephotometric data are also used to study the interstellar reddening inthe direction of the X-ray sources.

Some properties of the filamentary nebula at 1723 - 46
High resolution spectra of the interstellar NaI D2 absorption line havebeen obtained for seven B-type stars aligned with an extensivefilamentary nebula. Very fine filaments have now been found on a highcontrast print of a deep H-alpha and forbidden N II plate, makingidentification as a fossilized remnant probable but uncertain. Theinferred age is about 20,000 yr, the distance less than 200 pc, thediameter less than 17.5 pec, but the initial energy is only about 2 x 10to the 47th erg.

UBV photometry of E region standard stars of intermediate brightness
Photometry data are given for 335 stars in the nine E regions.Observations were made using a photometer and filters on the 47 cmreflector at Cape Town. The stellar dispersions are summarized. Data arepresented in tabular form.
