A catalog of stellar magnetic rotational phase curves
Magnetized stars usually exhibit periodic variations of the effective(longitudinal) magnetic field Be caused by their rotation. Wepresent a catalog of magnetic rotational phase curves, Be vs.the rotational phase φ, and tables of their parameters for 136stars on the main sequence and above it. Phase curves were obtained bythe least squares fitting of sine wave or double wave functions to theavailable Be measurements, which were compiled from theexisting literature. Most of the catalogued objects are chemicallypeculiar A and B type stars (127 stars). For some stars we also improvedor determined periods of their rotation. We discuss the distribution ofparameters describing magnetic rotational phase curves in our sample. All tables and Appendix A are only available in electronic form athttp://www.edpsciences.org

Catalogue of averaged stellar effective magnetic fields. I. Chemically peculiar A and B type stars
This paper presents the catalogue and the method of determination ofaveraged quadratic effective magnetic fields < B_e > for 596 mainsequence and giant stars. The catalogue is based on measurements of thestellar effective (or mean longitudinal) magnetic field strengths B_e,which were compiled from the existing literature. We analysed the properties of 352 chemically peculiar A and B stars inthe catalogue, including Am, ApSi, He-weak, He-rich, HgMn, ApSrCrEu, andall ApSr type stars. We have found that the number distribution of allchemically peculiar (CP) stars vs. averaged magnetic field strength isdescribed by a decreasing exponential function. Relations of this typehold also for stars of all the analysed subclasses of chemicalpeculiarity. The exponential form of the above distribution function canbreak down below about 100 G, the latter value representingapproximately the resolution of our analysis for A type stars.Table A.1 and its references are only available in electronic form atthe CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/407/631 and Tables 3 to 9are only available in electronic form at http://www.edpsciences.org

Metallicities of the SPB stars from the IUE ultraviolet spectra
We derived the stellar parameters (angular diameters, effectivetemperatures, metallicities) and interstellar reddenings for 20 SPB and34 reference stars observed during the IUE satellite mission. Theparameters were derived by means of an algorithmic procedure of fittingtheoretical flux distributions to the low-resolution IUE spectra andoptical spectrophotometric observations. Since the metallicity [m/H] hasa special importance for pulsating B type stars, we focused ourattention on that parameter. We found that the mean value of themetallicity of the considered SPB and reference stars amounts to [m/H] ~-0.20. The results only slightly depend on the reduction procedure usedfor the IUE images (NEWSIPS and INES). The metal abundances obtained inthis paper are in accordance with the average value of -0.2 dex forstars in the solar neighborhood recently reported by otherinvestigators.Tables 3-7 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/404/689

Photometric modelling of slowly pulsating B stars
The photometric characteristics of slowly pulsating B stars areinvestigated using a numerical approach. Stability calculations areperformed for a set of stellar models representative of the mid-B type, using a non-radial non-adiabatic pulsation code. The results from thesecalculations are used to synthesize photometry, in several commonsystems, for unstable modes of harmonic degrees l=1...4. Focusing on theGeneva system for illustrative purposes, a variety of techniques areemployed to analyse and visualize the synthetic data, including the useof multicolour-amplitudes and amplitude-phase diagnostic diagrams. Oneoutstanding aspect of the analysis is the discovery, for the l=2...4modes, of `inter-term cancellation' (ITC) - the process of destructiveinterference between the flux variations originating from surfacetemperature perturbations and those arising from radius perturbations. The ITC can be severe enough that a mode may be excited to a significantamplitude, and yet exhibit levels of photometric variability that fallbelow typical observational detection thresholds. Furthermore, it canaffect not only the light variations in a given photometric passband, but also the variations of the bolometric flux. However, thecancellation is dependent on wavelength, and will not occur to the samedegree in more than one passband. Therefore, simultaneous observation ina multitude of passbands represents the best approach to ensuring thatno modes are overlooked during searches for variability in B-type stars.A consequence of ITC is that ratios between the variability amplitude,in differing passbands, become very sensitive towards mode-to-modechanges in the pulsation. This increased sensitivity will tend tocomplicate any attempts at identifying the harmonic degrees of the modesresponsible for observed variability. However, the cancellation alsointroduces significant phase differences between the light variations ineach passband, especially for the l=3 and l=4 modes. On the grounds thatcorrespondingly large phase differences are not seen in observationaldata, it is argued that the variability seen in slowly pulsating B starscan tentatively be attributed to l=1 and l=2 modes.

Radial velocities. Measurements of 2800 B2-F5 stars for HIPPARCOS
Radial velocities have been determined for a sample of 2930 B2-F5 stars,95% observed by the Hipparcos satellite in the north hemisphere and 80%without reliable radial velocity up to now. Observations were obtainedat the Observatoire de Haute Provence with a dispersion of 80Ä,mm(-1) with the aim of studying stellar and galactic dynamics.Radial velocities have been measured by correlation with templates ofthe same spectral class. The mean obtained precision is 3.0 km s(-1)with three observations. A new MK spectral classification is estimatedfor all stars. Based on observations made at the Haute ProvenceObservatory, France and on data from The Hipparcos Catalogue, ESA.Tables 4, 5 and 6 are only available in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.htm

On the HIPPARCOS photometry of chemically peculiar B, A, and F stars
The Hipparcos photometry of the Chemically Peculiar main sequence B, A,and F stars is examined for variability. Some non-magnetic CP stars,Mercury-Manganese and metallic-line stars, which according to canonicalwisdom should not be variable, may be variable and are identified forfurther study. Some potentially important magnetic CP stars are noted.Tables 1, 2, and 3 are available only in electronic form at the CDS viaanonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

The HR-diagram from HIPPARCOS data. Absolute magnitudes and kinematics of BP - AP stars
The HR-diagram of about 1000 Bp - Ap stars in the solar neighbourhoodhas been constructed using astrometric data from Hipparcos satellite aswell as photometric and radial velocity data. The LM method\cite{luri95,luri96} allows the use of proper motion and radial velocitydata in addition to the trigonometric parallaxes to obtain luminositycalibrations and improved distances estimates. Six types of Bp - Apstars have been examined: He-rich, He-weak, HgMn, Si, Si+ and SrCrEu.Most Bp - Ap stars lie on the main sequence occupying the whole width ofit (about 2 mag), just like normal stars in the same range of spectraltypes. Their kinematic behaviour is typical of thin disk stars youngerthan about 1 Gyr. A few stars found to be high above the galactic planeor to have a high velocity are briefly discussed. Based on data from theESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite and photometric data collected in theGeneva system at ESO, La Silla (Chile) and at Jungfraujoch andGornergrat Observatories (Switzerland). Tables 3 and 4 are onlyavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

On the near infrared variability of chemically peculiar stars
Some CP stars have recently been discovered by Catalano et al. to bevariable also in the near infrared, although with smaller amplitudesthan in the visible. Hence an observational campaign was started inwhich the infrared light variability of a number of CP2 and CP4 starshas been investigated at the ESO-La Silla Observatory in the bands J, H,and K. As a general result, infrared variations show the same behaviorin all three filters but amplitudes are smaller than in the visible.

53 Persei: a slowly pulsating B star
A new investigation of the behaviour of the star 53Per was performed.New photometric observations allow to confirm two dominant periodsp_1=2.16d, p_2= 1.67d. A third one p_3= 3.64d is detected. These longperiod variations are present in our radial velocities data and in oldequivalent width data. The amplitude of the p_1 = 2.16d period increasesfrom 1977 to 1991, while the amplitude of the 1.67d period remainsconstant. Considering the observational characteristics of the starsince 1997, 53Per clearly belongs to the Slowly Pulsating B stars groupas defined by Waelkens (1991) and North & Paltani (1994).spectroscopic observations performed at the Haute Provence Observatory

The observed periods of AP and BP stars
A catalogue of all the periods up to now proposed for the variations ofCP2, CP3, and CP4 stars is presented. The main identifiers (HD and HR),the proper name, the variable-star name, and the spectral type andpeculiarity are given for each star as far as the coordinates at 2000.0and the visual magnitude. The nature of the observed variations (light, spectrum, magnetic field, etc.) is presented in a codified way. Thecatalogue is arranged in three tables: the bulk of the data, i.e. thosereferring to CP2, CP3, and CP4 stars, are given in Table 1, while thedata concerning He-strong stars are given in Table 2 and those foreclipsing or ellipsoidal variables are collected in Table 3. Notes arealso provided at the end of each table, mainly about duplicities. Thecatalogue contains data on 364 CP stars and is updated to 1996, October31. This research has made use of the SIMBAD database, operated at CDS,Strasbourg, France.

The slowly pulsating B stars HD 34798 and HD 45284.
We discuss the period analysis of two variable mid-B stars that havebeen observed in the Geneva photometric system between 1981 and 1990.Both HD 34798 and HD 45284 are multiperiodic g-mode pulsators thatbelong to the group of slowly pulsating B stars. The power spectrum ofHD 34798 is characterized by several modes which have about equal power. This star belongs to a visual binary, the other component of which is asingly periodical CP star. Quasi-simultaneous observations of both starsare discussed and turn out to be helpful to illustrate the multiperiodicbehavior of HD 34798. Three oscillation modes with a nearly stableamplitude are found; the remaining variability may be due to two veryclose oscillation modes, or, alternatively, to one mode with anintrinsically variable amplitude. Three oscillation frequencies can bedistinguished clearly in the power spectrum of HD 45284. The beatperiods for this star are the shortest for any SPB detected so far, andtherefore make HD 45284 an excellent candidate for verification of ourresults and for asteroseimological follow-up.

HD 37151: A new 'slowly pulsating B star'
We report the discovery of non-radial pusations with at least 5 periodsin the B8V star HD 37151, a probable member of the Orion OB1association. This result is based on 465 photometric measurements in 7colors spanning 12 years. In addition, 30 high-resolution spectra weretaken in the Mg II lambda 4481 region: they show a small projectedrotational velocity and slight variations of the line profiles where atleast two out of the five photometric periods can be identified.Although this star was once classified B8Vp(Si), all available data showit is a normal star instead. Therefore, this object in not anotherexample (after ET And) of a pulsating silicon star, but entirely matchesthe characteristics of Waelkens' 'Slowly Pulsating B stars' (SPB). Itoffers the interest of being the second coolest member of this class, helping to define empirically the cool border of the related instabilitydomain. The ratio of color to visual amplitudes A(sub(u-v)/Avof the known SPB stars is nicely correlated with Teff, ingood agreement with theoretical expectations for non-radial pulsationswith order less than or = 2.

Far-ultraviolet stellar photometry: A field in Orion
Far-ultraviolet photometry for 625 objects in Orion is presented. Thesedata were extracted from electrographic camera images obtained duringsounding rocket flights in 1975 and 1982. The 1975 images were centeredclose to the belt of Orion while the 1982 images were centeredapproximately 9 deg further north. One hundred and fifty stars fell inthe overlapping region and were observed with both cameras. Sixty-eightpercent of the objects were tentatively identified with known starsusing the SIMBAD database while another 24% are blends of objects tooclose together to separate with our resolution. As in previous studies, the majority of the identified ultraviolet sources are early-type stars. However, there are a significant number for which no such identificationwas possible, and we suggest that these are interesting objects whichshould be further investigated. Seven stars were found which were brightin the ultraviolet but faint in the visible. We suggest that some ofthese are nearby white dwarfs.

Wind driven mass transfer in interacting binary systems
Quantitative estimates for conditions governing wind-driven masstransfer in interacting binary systems are presented. It is shown that, for a semidetached system in which the lobe-filling star is a red giant, mass loss from this star by the system as a whole can drive masstransfer. If the mass is lost on a sufficiently short time-scale, thiswind-driven mass transfer can dominate over the traditional-nucleardriven mass transfer. If additional angular momentum is lost because theescaping material is forced to corotate out to some Alfven radius, themass transfer can be driven at an even greater rate. In this case therates of mass transfer and of mass loss can be quantified as functionsof the mass ratio and the Alfven radius. Some numerical models of theexpected evolution are presented and observational predictions areexamined. It is found that the radii of evolved semidetached systems aremore consistent with wind-driven evolution than the traditionalnuclear-driven Riche-lobe overflow.

Absolute magnitudes of B emission line stars - Correlation between the luminosity excess and the effective temperature
A new determination of the visual absolute magnitude of Be stars iscarried out. For this, a new calibration of visual absolute magnitudesof B stars of luminosity classes, V, IV, and III is first obtained froma sample of 215 stars. The absolute luminosity excess in the visual isdetermined for a sample of 49 Be stars. It is found that this excess iscorrelated with the effective temperature of the underlying stars. Awell defined correlation between this excess and the emission in thefirst two Balmer lines is established. From these results, using asimple model of circumstellar envelope, it is inferred that the zones ofthe circumstellar envelope contributing to the emission in the continuumand in the lines have to be rather small. It is also deduced that theemission measure of the envelope is correlated with the temperature ofthe central star and that the irregular photometric variations of Bestars are an envelope-opacity phenomenon.

Luminosities, masses, and ages of B-type stars
Measurements of H-gamma lines and photometry of the Balmer discontinuityare combined with models of stellar atmospheres and interiors to derivevalues of T(eff) log g, mass, and M(bol) for main-sequence B-type starsin the Alpha Per and the Pleiades clusters and in the Orion, Sco-Gen,and I Lac associations. The masses as a function of T(eff) agree withthe analyses of eclipsing binary orbits. The luminosities yielddistances for the observed clusters and associations that are in goodagreement with independent determinations. The observed main sequence isbroader than predicted by standard models and suggests that mixing mayplay a role in extending the main-sequence lifetime. Stars within eachcluster and association show a range of ages, a result that suggeststhat star formation occurred over a period of at least 1-3 x 10 to the7th yr.

Walraven photometry of nearby southern OB associations
Homogeneous Walraven (VBLUW) photometry is presented for 5260 stars inthe regions of five nearby southern OB associations: Scorpio Centaurus(Sco OB2), Orion OB1, Canis Major OB1, Monoceros OB1, and Scutum OB2.Derived V and (B - V) in the Johnson system are included.

Empirical temperature calibrations for early-type stars
Three temperature calibrations of suitable photometric quantities havebeen derived for O and B stars. A sample of 120 stars with reliableT(eff.) determinations has been used for establishing each calibration. The different calibrations have been critically discussed and compared.Temperature determinations for 1009 program stars have been obtainedwith an accuracy of the order of 10 percent.

Radii and space orientation of the rotational axes of AP stars
The inclination of the rotation axis to the line of sight (i) has beendetermined for a carefully selected sample of Ap stars with reliablevalues of periods of rotation, and values of the stellar radius (R)times sin i have been compared with values of normal main-sequencestars. The findings that none of the obtained R x sin i values aresignificantly larger than the upper limit for the radius of a mainsequence stars and that the mean radius of Ap stars is close to thenormal main sequence value suggest that most Ap stars are main-sequenceobjects. The observed i distribution implies that the distribution ofthe rotational axes of Ap stars in space is random.

The binary companion of the classical Cepheid AW Per
An analysis of IUE spectra of the companion of AW Per shows it to be anextreme BpSi/HeW star with a spectral type of B7 V to B8 V. The flux ofthe composite spectrum from 1200 A through V is found to be well matchedby F7 Ib and B8 V standard stars with Delta M(V) = 3.1 mag. The resultssuggest that the mass of the Cepheid must be greater than 4.7 solarmasses. The flux distribution of the star and the mass limits from theorbit are consistent with a companion that is itself a binary.

First supplement to the catalog of observed periods of AP stars
Supplementary data on the periods of Ap stars with references arepresented; 58 new stars are introduced for which periodic variabilityhas been discovered since 1983. For some of these stars periodicity wasknown before 1983 but they were not reported in the previous catalog.Recently attributed variable star names are also reported.

IUE observations of the broad continuum feature at 1400 A in the silicon and related stars
The upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars have previously beenstudied spectrophotometrically using low-resolution TD-1 spectra. Theseshow that the broad continuum feature at 1400 A is a useful indicator ofSi anomaly. In this paper the observations are extended to IUElow-resolution spectra and it is shown that this feature is indeed wellcorrelated with Si and also with optical chemical peculiarity indices. Its utility in selecting silicon stars is further demonstrated. Thisfeature is likely due to autoionization of Si II and is the bestavailable discriminator of the overabundance of a key element in the Apstars.

Photometric variability of AP and He-weak stars in clusters and associations. II
Periods and lightcurves based on data gathered in the Geneva photometricsystem are given for 19 CP2 and CP4 stars belonging to 11 clusters andassociations. In addition, the lightcurve and approximate period isgiven for HD 22114, a field Ap star recently discovered by means ofGeneva photometry. The strange behavior of the star HD 37151 isconfirmed, althouugh it shows only one stable period. A cosinusoid withits first harmonic is fitted to each lightcurve and the covariancematrix of the errors on the fitted parameters is given, as well as theuncertainty on the period. This work confirms that hot magnetic starsundergo no braking of their axial rotation during their main sequencelifetime and that conservation of angular momentum suffices to explainthe slight increase of period with age.
