Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog
We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

A List of Late-Type Stars in the Galactic Antirotation Direction
Low-resolution objective-prism spectra (1360 Å mm^-1 at Hγ) of184 late-type stars in the Galactic antirotation direction have beenobtained with the Curtis Schmidt telescope at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory. The stars have been classified into threegroups: F6-G2, G3-K0, and K1-M8. Subsequent observations on the BV andDDO systems have been obtained. The correlation between the thin-prismclasses and the DDO classes is as expected, with no significantsystematic differences of note. A comparison of Guide Star Catalogmagnitudes, corrected to V, is also made, with favorable results. Thestars in this list are expected to be useful for studying the structureand star formation history of the Milky Way.

The dwarf star content of elliptical and lenticular galaxies
Near-IR spectra of 14 galaxies are analyzed to determine accurate lowermain-sequence dwarf light contributions and to set limits on themass-to-light (M/L) ratios. While dwarf light contributes 30-50 percentof the total at 8200 A, low measured FeH indices preclude contributionsof more than 15 percent to the integrated light at 9900 A from late Mdwarfs. M/L ratios of about 6 are found, consistent with dynamicalestimates. The brighter galaxies exhibit substantial gradients in theequivalent width of the Na I feature. This is at least partly due tometal abundance gradients also reflected in the TiO index, but there issome evidence for concentrations of metal-rich dwarfs toward the centersof giant galaxies.

Differential population synthesis of early-type galaxies. I - Spectrophotometric atlas of synthesis standard spectra
Continuous spectrophotometry has been obtained for 200 objects at aresolution of 10-17 A over the wavelength region 3600-10,000 A.Kron-Cousins BVRI colors are computed from the spectra and compared withpublished photoelectric photometry. The (V - R)C color index is used togroup the individual observations to form synthesis standard spectra for48 common spectral types. The standard groups include a solar abundancesequence of most spectral types and luminosity classes, metal-rich andmetal weak G - K giant-branch sequences, and horizontal-branch giants. The variations with color, luminosity, and metallicity of severalprominent line strengths are discussed. The spectral atlas is availableas a FITS magnetic tape.

UBV photometry of E region standard stars of intermediate brightness
Photometry data are given for 335 stars in the nine E regions.Observations were made using a photometer and filters on the 47 cmreflector at Cape Town. The stellar dispersions are summarized. Data arepresented in tabular form.
