New Estimates of the Solar-Neighborhood Massive Star Birthrate and the Galactic Supernova Rate The birthrate of stars of masses >=10 Msolar is estimatedfrom a sample of just over 400 O3-B2 dwarfs within 1.5 kpc of the Sunand the result extrapolated to estimate the Galactic supernova ratecontributed by such stars. The solar-neighborhood Galactic-plane massivestar birthrate is estimated at ~176 stars kpc-3Myr-1. On the basis of a model in which the Galactic stellardensity distribution comprises a ``disk+central hole'' like that of thedust infrared emission (as proposed by Drimmel and Spergel), theGalactic supernova rate is estimated at probably not less than ~1 normore than ~2 per century and the number of O3-B2 dwarfs within the solarcircle at ~200,000.

Catalog of Galactic OB Stars An all-sky catalog of Galactic OB stars has been created by extendingthe Case-Hamburg Galactic plane luminous-stars surveys to include 5500additional objects drawn from the literature. This work brings the totalnumber of known or reasonably suspected OB stars to over 16,000.Companion databases of UBVβ photometry and MK classifications forthese objects include nearly 30,000 and 20,000 entries, respectively.

New periodic variables from the Hipparcos epoch photometry Two selection statistics are used to extract new candidate periodicvariables from the epoch photometry of the Hipparcos catalogue. Theprimary selection criterion is a signal-to-noise ratio. The dependenceof this statistic on the number of observations is calibrated usingabout 30000 randomly permuted Hipparcos data sets. A significance levelof 0.1 per cent is used to extract a first batch of candidate variables. The second criterion requires that the optimal frequency be unaffectedif the data are de-trended by low-order polynomials. We find 2675 newcandidate periodic variables, of which the majority (2082) are from theHipparcos`unsolved' variables. Potential problems with theinterpretation of the data (e.g. aliasing) are discussed.

Two-colour photometry for 9473 components of close Hipparcos double and multiple stars Using observations obtained with the Tycho instrument of the ESAHipparcos satellite, a two-colour photometry is produced for componentsof more than 7 000 Hipparcos double and multiple stars with angularseparations 0.1 to 2.5 arcsec. We publish 9473 components of 5173systems with separations above 0.3 arcsec. The majority of them did nothave Tycho photometry in the Hipparcos catalogue. The magnitudes arederived in the Tycho B_T and V_T passbands, similar to the Johnsonpassbands. Photometrically resolved components of the binaries withstatistically significant trigonometric parallaxes can be put on an HRdiagram, the majority of them for the first time. Based on observationsmade with the ESA Hipparcos satellite.

Classification and Identification of IRAS Sources with Low-Resolution Spectra IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources. These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on thepresence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of thecontinuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical andinfrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types arelisted if they are known. The correlations between thephotospheric/optical and circumstellar/infrared classification arediscussed.

UBV-beta photometry of luminous early-type stars and emission-line stars in the Southern Coalsack region A catalog is presented giving UBV-beta photometry for 144 luminous OBstars and UBV photometry for 154 emission-line stars in a 100-sq-degregion around the Southern Coalsack. Total visual absorptions anddistance moduli have been determined for all the stars and aretabulated. Comparisons with previous observations are discussed.

Hot components and circumstellar grains in M supergiant syncretic binaries Ultraviolet and infrared spectra were obtained in order to study grainsin cool star and hot star syncretic type binaries. Grains are found inonly about half of the syncretic systems. The results suggest thatgrains have not formed in many syncretic systems because of ultravioletradiation from the hot star. Circumstellar extinction could not beunambiguously detected in those systems with grains.

Valinhos 2.2 micron survey of the Southern Galactic plane Positions and infrared photometry of 338 sources This paper reports on JHKLM photometric measurements of 338 brightinfrared stars found in a 2.2-micron survey of a 10 x 100-deg lane ofthe Southern Galactic plane. More than 2/3 of the objects are notidentified with catalogued stars and are likely to belong-period-variable or reddened giant or supergiant stars.

Close visual binaries. III - Parameters and evolutionary status New Yale isochrones, which have been tested for accuracy by Corbally(1984), provide the means to investigate interesting visual binaries, especially those whose classifications and photometry do not match well.Various parameters are deduced for those binaries which fitted theisochrones (e.g. ages, metal abundances, luminosities of peculiarstars); various solutions are systematically developed for those whichdid not fit; and a likely status of evolution is proposed (e.g.,duplicity of the components, premain-sequence, blue straggler, horizontal branch, optical pair, data inaccuracies). Evolution aroundthe helium flash and diffusion theory are briefly considered. Theseparameters and statuses provide a wealth of new stellar data andsuggestions for further investigation.

Close visual binaries. I - MK classifications Each component of 170 close visual binaries has been classified with newprocedures for controlling contamination problems. These classificationsare presented and are shown to be on the MK system. Two sources of areascanner UBV photometry were compared in order to establish homogeneousphotometric as well as spectroscopic data. From a consideration ofsystematic errors in the V magnitude difference (Delta V) betweencomponents the photometry of Hurly and Warner (1983) is to be preferred.Absolute magnitudes for each binary are derived from Delta V via atested MK - M(v) map.
