The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the solar neighbourhood. III. Improved distances, ages, and kinematics
Context: Ages, chemical compositions, velocity vectors, and Galacticorbits for stars in the solar neighbourhood are fundamental test datafor models of Galactic evolution. The Geneva-Copenhagen Survey of theSolar Neighbourhood (Nordström et al. 2004; GCS), amagnitude-complete, kinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F andG dwarfs, is the largest available sample with complete data for starswith ages spanning that of the disk. Aims: We aim to improve theaccuracy of the GCS data by implementing the recent revision of theHipparcos parallaxes. Methods: The new parallaxes yield improvedastrometric distances for 12 506 stars in the GCS. We also use theparallaxes to verify the distance calibration for uvby? photometryby Holmberg et al. (2007, A&A, 475, 519; GCS II). We add newselection criteria to exclude evolved cool stars giving unreliableresults and derive distances for 3580 stars with large parallax errorsor not observed by Hipparcos. We also check the GCS II scales of T_effand [Fe/H] and find no need for change. Results: Introducing thenew distances, we recompute MV for 16 086 stars, and U, V, W,and Galactic orbital parameters for the 13 520 stars that also haveradial-velocity measurements. We also recompute stellar ages from thePadova stellar evolution models used in GCS I-II, using the new valuesof M_V, and compare them with ages from the Yale-Yonsei andVictoria-Regina models. Finally, we compare the observed age-velocityrelation in W with three simulated disk heating scenarios to show thepotential of the data. Conclusions: With these revisions, thebasic data for the GCS stars should now be as reliable as is possiblewith existing techniques. Further improvement must await consolidationof the T_eff scale from angular diameters and fluxes, and the Gaiatrigonometric parallaxes. Lupus-TR-3b: A Low-Mass Transiting Hot Jupiter in the Galactic Plane?
We present a strong case for a transiting hot Jupiter planet identifiedduring a single-field transit survey toward the Lupus Galactic plane.The object, Lupus-TR-3b, transits a V=17.4 K1 V host star every 3.91405days. Spectroscopy and stellar colors indicate a host star witheffective temperature 5000 +/- 150 K, with a stellar mass and radius of0.87 +/- 0.04 Msolar and 0.82 +/- 0.05 Rsolar,respectively. Limb-darkened transit fitting yields a companion radius of0.89+/-0.07 RJ and an orbital inclination of88.3+1.3-0.8 deg. Magellan 6.5 m MIKE radialvelocity measurements reveal a 2.4 ? K = 114 +/- 25 ms-1 sinusoidal variation in phase with the transit ephemeris.The resulting mass is 0.81 +/- 0.18 MJ and density 1.4 +/-0.4 g cm-3. Y-band PANIC image deconvolution reveals aV>=21 red neighbor 0.4'' away which, although highlyunlikely, we cannot conclusively rule out as a blended binary withcurrent data. However, blend simulations show that only the most unusualbinary system can reproduce our observations. This object is very likelya planet, detected from a highly efficient observational strategy.Lupus-TR-3b constitutes the faintest ground-based detection to date, andone of the lowest mass hot Jupiters known.

The Michigan/MIKE Fiber System Survey of Stellar Radial Velocities in Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies: Acquisition and Reduction of Data
We introduce a stellar velocity survey of dwarf spheroidal galaxies,undertaken using the Michigan/MIKE Fiber System (MMFS) at theMagellan/Clay 6.5 m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. As of 2006November we have used MMFS to collect 6415 high-resolution(R=20,000-25,000) spectra from 5180 stars in four dwarf spheroidalgalaxies: Carina, Fornax, Sculptor, and Sextans. Spectra sample therange 5140-5180 Å, which includes the prominent magnesium tripletabsorption feature. We measure radial velocity (RV) to a medianprecision of 2.0 km s-1 for stars as faint as V~20.5. Fromthe spectra we also are able to measure the strength of iron andmagnesium absorption features using spectral indices that correlate witheffective temperature, surface gravity, and chemical abundance.Measurement of line strength allows us to identify interlopingforeground stars independently of velocity and to examine themetallicity distribution among dSph members. Here we present detaileddescriptions of MMFS, our target selection and spectroscopicobservations, the data reduction procedure, and error analysis. Wecompare our RV results to previously published measurements forindividual stars. In some cases we find evidence for a mild,velocity-dependent offset between the RVs that we measure using themagnesium triplet and previously published RV measurements derived fromthe infrared calcium triplet. In companion papers we will present thecomplete data sets and kinematic analyses of these new observations.This paper includes data obtained with the 6.5 m Magellan Telescopeslocated at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile.

Proper-motion binaries in the Hipparcos catalogue. Comparison with radial velocity data
Context: .This paper is the last in a series devoted to the analysis ofthe binary content of the Hipparcos Catalogue. Aims: .Thecomparison of the proper motions constructed from positions spanning ashort (Hipparcos) or long time (Tycho-2) makes it possible to uncoverbinaries with periods of the order of or somewhat larger than the shorttime span (in this case, the 3 yr duration of the Hipparcos mission),since the unrecognised orbital motion will then add to the propermotion. Methods: .A list of candidate proper motion binaries isconstructed from a carefully designed χ2 test evaluatingthe statistical significance of the difference between the Tycho-2 andHipparcos proper motions for 103 134 stars in common between the twocatalogues (excluding components of visual systems). Since similar listsof proper-motion binaries have already been constructed, the presentpaper focuses on the evaluation of the detection efficiency ofproper-motion binaries, using different kinds of control data (mostlyradial velocities). The detection rate for entries from the NinthCatalogue of Spectroscopic Binary Orbits (S_B^9) is evaluated, as wellas for stars like barium stars, which are known to be all binaries, andfinally for spectroscopic binaries identified from radial velocity datain the Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs in the solarneighbourhood. Results: .Proper motion binaries are efficientlydetected for systems with parallaxes in excess of ~20 mas, and periodsin the range 1000-30 000 d. The shortest periods in this range(1000-2000 d, i.e., once to twice the duration of the Hipparcos mission)may appear only as DMSA/G binaries (accelerated proper motion in theHipparcos Double and Multiple System Annex). Proper motion binariesdetected among S_B9 systems having periods shorter than about400 d hint at triple systems, the proper-motion binary involving acomponent with a longer orbital period. A list of 19 candidate triplesystems is provided. Binaries suspected of having low-mass(brown-dwarf-like) companions are listed as well. Among the 37 bariumstars with parallaxes larger than 5 mas, only 7 exhibit no evidence forduplicity whatsoever (be it spectroscopic or astrometric). Contributions to the Nearby Stars (NStars) Project: Spectroscopy of Stars Earlier than M0 within 40 pc-The Southern Sample
We are obtaining spectra, spectral types, and basic physical parametersfor the nearly 3600 dwarf and giant stars earlier than M0 in theHipparcos catalog within 40 pc of the Sun. Here we report on resultsfor 1676 stars in the southern hemisphere observed at Cerro TololoInter-American Observatory and Steward Observatory. These resultsinclude new, precise, homogeneous spectral types, basic physicalparameters (including the effective temperature, surface gravity, andmetallicity [M/H]), and measures of the chromospheric activity of ourprogram stars. We include notes on astrophysically interesting stars inthis sample, the metallicity distribution of the solar neighborhood, anda table of solar analogs. We also demonstrate that the bimodal nature ofthe distribution of the chromospheric activity parameterlogR'HK depends strongly on the metallicity, andwe explore the nature of the ``low-metallicity'' chromosphericallyactive K-type dwarfs.

Internal Kinematics of the Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy
We present new radial velocity results for 176 stars in the Fornax dwarfspheroidal galaxy, of which at least 156 are probable Fornax members. Wecombine with previously published data to obtain a radial velocitysample with 206 stars, of which at least 176 are probable Fornaxmembers. We detect the hint of rotation about an axis near Fornax'smorphological minor axis, although the significance of the rotationsignal in the galactic rest frame is sensitive to the adopted value ofFornax's proper motion. Regardless, the observed stellar kinematics isdominated by random motions, and we do not find kinematic evidence oftidal disruption. The projected velocity dispersion profile of thebinned data set remains flat over the sampled region, which reaches amaximum angular radius of 65'. Single-component King models in whichmass follows light fail to reproduce the observed flatness of thevelocity dispersion profile. Two-component (luminous plus dark matter)models can reproduce the data, provided that the dark component extendssufficiently beyond the luminous component and the central dark matterdensity is of the same order as the central luminous density. Theserequirements suggest a more massive, darker Fornax than standardcore-fitting analyses have previously concluded, with M/LVover the sampled region reaching 10-40 times the M/LV of theluminous component. We also apply a nonparametric mass estimationtechnique, introduced in a companion paper. Although it is designed tooperate on data sets containing velocities for >1000 stars, theestimation yields preliminary results suggesting M/LV~15inside r<1.5 kpc.

The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of ˜14 000 F and G dwarfs
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our˜63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. New Hipparcos-based Parallaxes for 424 Faint Stars
We present a catalog of 424 common proper-motion companions to Hipparcosstars with good (>3 σ) parallaxes, thereby effectively providingnew parallaxes for these companions. Compared with typical stars in theHipparcos catalog, these stars are substantially dimmer. The catalogincludes 20 white dwarfs and an additional 29 stars withMV>14, the great majority of the latter being M dwarfs.

Improved Astrometry and Photometry for the Luyten Catalog. II. Faint Stars and the Revised Catalog
We complete construction of a catalog containing improved astrometry andnew optical/infrared photometry for the vast majority of NLTT starslying in the overlap of regions covered by POSS I and by the secondincremental Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) release, approximately 44%of the sky. The epoch 2000 positions are typically accurate to 130 mas,the proper motions to 5.5 mas yr-1, and the V-J colors to0.25 mag. Relative proper motions of binary components are measured to 3mas yr-1. The false-identification rate is ~1% for11<~V<~18 and substantially less at brighter magnitudes. Theseimprovements permit the construction of a reduced proper-motion diagramthat, for the first time, allows one to classify NLTT stars intomain-sequence (MS) stars, subdwarfs (SDs), and white dwarfs (WDs). We inturn use this diagram to analyze the properties of both our catalog andthe NLTT catalog on which it is based. In sharp contrast to popularbelief, we find that NLTT incompleteness in the plane is almostcompletely concentrated in MS stars, and that SDs and WDs are detectedalmost uniformly over the sky δ>-33deg. Our catalogwill therefore provide a powerful tool to probe these populationsstatistically, as well as to reliably identify individual SDs and WDs.

Revised Coordinates and Proper Motions of the Stars in the Luyten Half-Second Catalog
We present refined coordinates and proper-motion data for the highproper-motion (HPM) stars in the Luyten Half-Second (LHS) catalog. Thepositional uncertainty in the original Luyten catalog is typicallygreater than 10" and is often greater than 30". We have used the digitalscans of the POSS I and POSS II plates to derive more accurate positionsand proper motions of the objects. Out of the 4470 candidates in the LHScatalog, 4323 objects were manually reidentified in the POSS I and POSSII scans. A small fraction of the stars were not found because of thelack of finder charts and digitized POSS II scans. The uncertainties inthe revised positions are typically ~2" but can be as high as ~8" in afew cases, which is a large improvement over the original data.Cross-correlation with the Tycho-2 and Hipparcos catalogs yielded 819candidates (with mR<~12). For these brighter sources, theposition and proper-motion data were replaced with the more accurateTycho-2/Hipparcos data. In total, we have revised proper-motionmeasurements and coordinates for 4040 stars and revised coordinates for4330 stars. The electronic version of the paper5 contains the updated information on all 4470stars in the LHS catalog.

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of the nearby stars
We present X-ray data for all entries of the Third Catalogue of NearbyStars \cite[(Gliese & Jahreiss 1991)]{gli91} that have been detectedas X-ray sources in the ROSAT all-sky survey. The catalogue contains1252 entries yielding an average detection rate of 32.9 percent. Inaddition to count rates, source detection parameters, hardness ratios,and X-ray fluxes we also list X-ray luminosities derived from Hipparcosparallaxes. Astrometric positions of stars with high proper motions in the Southern Hemisphere
Several stars with large proper motions, cited by W.J. Luyten, wereincluded in the preliminary programme for the HIPPARCOS mission. Whenperforming preparatory measurements of plates, difficulties wereencountered in identifying certain of these stars when relying only onpublished coordinates. We have taken advantage of this work whichrelates to the southern sky in order to determine the astrometricposition of the greatest possible number of these objects, even forthose which were not included in the programme. Core velocity dispersions for 25 Galactic and 10 old Magellanic globular clusters.
We present, for 25 Galactic and 10 old Magellanic globular clusters,projected velocity dispersion (σ_p_) measurements obtained byapplying a cross-correlation technique to integrated-light spectra. Inorder to understand and estimate the statistical errors of thesemeasurements due to small numbers of bright stars dominating theintegrated light, we provide an extensive discussion based on detailednumerical simulations. These errors are smaller if the integration areais larger and/or the cluster concentration higher. The simulations showthat measurements are reliable when the integrated light within theintegration area is brighter than a given magnitude. The statisticalerrors on the σ_p_ measurements of Magellanic globular clustersare small because of a physically large integration area, whereas theycan be important for measurements carried out over small central areasin Galactic clusters. The present observational results are used tooutline a few characteristics of the globular cluster fundamental plane.In this respect, the old Magellanic globular clusters appear similar tothe Galactic clusters.

A kinematic study of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy.
We derive new, accurate radial velocity (V_r_) measurements for 23Sculptor K-giant stars from high-resolution echelle spectra made withthe ESO NTT and 3.6-m telescopes. Comparing our velocities with previousmeasurements (Armandroff & Da Costa 1986) for 15 stars, we show thatthe V_r_ measurements are reliable, and discover two V_r_ variable starswith large amplitudes (>17km/s). These variations are best explainedby binary orbital motions. As our sample is likely to contain manyadditional undetected binaries with smaller velocity amplitudes (due toless favorable orbit inclinations, smaller mass ratios, or longerperiods), the observations suggest a large binary fraction in Sculptor,possibly larger than ~20% within the period limits ~0.5 to ~20yrs. Thisresult is consistent with the recent discoveries of 2-3 large-amplitudevariable stars in Ursa Minor and Sextant. Previous kinematic studies ofdSph galaxies based on single-epoch measurements are consequently notfully reliable. Radial velocity-variable stars artificially inflate thevelocity dispersion and the mass-to-light (M/L) ratio estimates. Thisweakens the case for dark matter, at least in some of the dSph galaxies.In the case of Sculptor, a velocity dispersion of 6.2+/-1.1km/s and aM/L ratio of 13+/-6(M/L_V_)sun_ are derived from our sample.These results do not provide unambiguous evidence for a dominant darkmatter component in Sculptor, mainly because our sample is likely tocontain additional undetected V_r_ variables of lower amplitude.

A large, complete, volume-limited sample of G-type dwarfs. I. Completion of Stroemgren UVBY photometry
Four-colour photometry of potential dwarf stars of types G0 to K2,selected from the Michigan Spectral Catalogues (Vol. 1-3), has beencarried out. The results are presented in a catalogue containing 4247uvby observations of 3900 stars, all south of δ = -26deg. Theoverall internal rms errors of one observation (transformed to thestandard system) of a program star in the interval 8.5 < V < 10.5are 0.0044, 0.0021, 0.0039, and 0.0059, respectively, in V, b-y, m_1_ ,and c_1_. The purpose of the catalogue, combined with earliercatalogues, is to allow selection of a large, complete, volume-limitedsample of G- and K-type dwarfs, investigate their metallicitydistribution, and compare it to predictions of various models ofgalactic chemical evolution. Future papers in this series will discussthese subjects.

The Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy - How dark is it?
Precise radial velocities obtained with a photon-counting echellespectrograph for a sample of 17 red giants in the Carina dwarfspheroidal galaxy are presented. The calculation of the systemicvelocity and central velocity dispersion of Carina is described, theexisting data constraining the structural parameters of Carina arereviewed, and an estimate of the central surface brightness of thegalaxy is derived. These data are used to estimate the central massdensity of Carina, as well as central and global mass-to-light ratios.It is concluded that the inferred mass densities and mass-density limitsfor all acceptable models imply the presence of a significant DMcomponent in Carina. DM properties of all well-studied dSph systems aresummarized and compared.

A kinematic study of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy
Precise radial velocities of 44 stars and four globular clusters located in two fields of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy are obtained on the basis of photon-counting echelle spectroscopy with a resolution of approximately 14 km/s. BV CCD photometry of the giant branch of Fornax in both fields are presented as well. A variety of kinematic and photometric criteria are used to identify 10-12 probable nonmembers in the present sample of spectroscopically observed stars. Based on the most probable members, the mean heliocentric systemic velocity of Fornax is 53.0 + or - 1.8 km/s, with no evidence of any significant rotation about the minor axis. The intrinsic velocity dispersion of the stars in Fornax's central field is 9.9 + or - 1.7 km/s, while for the outer field the velocity dispersion is 12.0 + or - 2.8 km/s. The true central velocity dispersion is not more than 1.6 km/s larger than the observed central dispersions for a number of reasonable models.

Four-color UVBY and H-beta photometry of high-velocity and metal-poor stars. I - The catalogue of observations
A catalog of four-color uvby and H-beta photometry for 711 high-velocityand metal-poor stars is given. The selection of the stars and theobserving and reduction techniques used to obtain these data arediscussed. The photometry has been transformed closely onto the standarduvby-beta system. The errors of the data have been estimated using bothinternal and external comparisons. The data are uniform over the sky;that is, there are no significant north-south differences. For the largemajority of stars the mean errors of V, m1, c1, and beta are less than +or - 0.008 mag, and the error of b-y is less than + or - 0.005 mag.Values of V, b-y and beta and rough photometric classifications aregiven for 63 red and/or evolved stars that fall outside the range of thephotometric transformations.

Progress toward a multiobject radial-velocity spectrometer
It is shown that it is possible to obtain stellar radial velocities ofhigh accuracy using a fiber-fed echelle spectrograph with no crossdisperser. Although the resulting spectrum contains many overlappingorders, the radial-velocity information is still present. Velocities maybe obtained by cross correlation with reference data obtained with thesame instrument. The accuracy is a function of the signal-to-noiseratio, and ranges from + or - 4 km/s to + or - 1 km/s. Velocities areobtained with exposure times just sufficient to obtain the barest traceof a spectrum using the same spectrograph and CCD detector with a crossdisperser. Thus, it appears possible to obtain precision similar to thatobtained with an order separator, but with considerably bettersensitivity, due to a multiplexing gain. Moreover, the overlappingorders of the stellar spectrum only occupy a few rows of the CCD. Usinga multiple-fiber-feed device, many such spectra could be fit on the CCD.This leads to the expectation of obtaining many radial velocitiessimultaneously using a multiobject spectrometer now under constructionat Cerro Tololo.

Catalog of proper-motion stars. III - Stars brighter than visual magnitude 15.1, south of declination +30 deg, and with annual proper motion between 0.5 and 0.7 arcsec
A catalog of (VRI) photometry for the some one thousand stars withannual proper motion between 0.5 and 0.7 arcsec, brighter than visualmagnitude 15.1, and south of declination +30 deg is presented. Theavailable proper-motion and radial-velocity data are also summarized.

The radio galaxy IC 4296 (PKS 1333-33). II. Spectroscopy, surface photometry, X-ray imaging, and infrared photometry
The authors present stellar rotation and velocity dispersion data,optical surface photometry, Einstein Observatory IPC X-ray data, andaperture (optical and infrared) photometry of the radio galaxy IC 4296.It is found that the projected stellar rotation axis is misaligned withthe projected radio axis by ?28°. The photometric major andminor axis surface brightness profiles of IC 4296 are well representedby King (1966) models in the range 3arcsec < r < 100arcsec. Thecentral mass-to-light ratio is M/LB = (13±3)h (hHubble constant in units of 100 km s-1Mpc-1). TheIPC X-ray image shows a slightly resolved source centered on IC 4296.Isothermal, hydrostatic atmospheres that are consistent with the X-raydata can be constructed.

Radial velocities for 28 southern young open clusters
Radial velocities for 83 OB-stars in 28 southern young open clusters arepresented. The internal and external accuracy of the data is in goodagreement with results obtained by Ardeberg and Maurice (1977) with thesame equipment. From a comparison with radial velocities existing in theliterature no systematic radial-velocity differences for stars in commonare found.

Kinematics of elliptical-like galaxies with dust lanes
Spectroscopic observations have been made of four elliptical-likegalaxies which contain strong dust lanes. Stellar rotation curves andvelocity dispersion profiles are presented in at least two positionangles for each galaxy. Spectra taken along the dust lanes also exhibitweak emission lines from which the velocity field of the ionized gas hasbeen determined. In two cases the rotation axes of the stellar andgaseous components are orthogonal. A comparison is made with publishedmodels of tumbling prolate bars and constraints on the maximum figurerotation are derived. The nature of the present sample is brieflydiscussed in the light of these new observations.

Wolf-Rayet stars in the Magellanic Clouds. I - The WN3 binary AB 6 in the SMC
Thirteen spectrograms of AB 6 were obtained during a one-week intervalin December 1978 and January 1980, using the Carnegie image tube on theYale 40 cm telescope at CTIO, Chile. The spectrum is dominated by thebroad, moderately weak emission of He II A and the Balmer seriesabsorption lines, for which radial velocities and a journal ofobservations are given. Moderate dispersion spectroscopy shows AB 6 toconsist of a WN 3 star of about six solar masses or more in mutual 6.9day orbit about a O7 type star of about 37 or more solar masses. Themass ratio, WR:OB, is low compared to galactic WN binaries of highionization, although there are no binaries with WN components as hot asthis known in the Galaxy. It is possible but unlikely that the low massratio may be caused by the inclusion of another unresolved OB star.
