The Case for Third Bodies as the Cause of Period Changes in Selected Algol Systems
Many eclipsing binary star systems show long-term variations in theirorbital periods, evident in their O-C (observed minus calculated period)diagrams. With data from the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment(ROTSE-I) compiled in the SkyDOT database, New Mexico State University 1m data, and recent American Association of Variable Star Observers(AAVSO) data, we revisit Borkovits and Hegedüs's best-casecandidates for third-body effects in eclipsing binaries: AB And, TV Cas,XX Cep, and AK Her. We also examine the possibility of a third bodyorbiting Y Cam. Our new data support their suggestion that a third bodyis present in all systems except AK Her, as is revealed by thesinusoidal variations of the O-C residuals. Our new data suggest that athird body alone cannot explain the variations seen in the O-C residualsof AK Her. We also provide a table of 143 eclipsing binary systems thathave historical AAVSO O-C data with new values computed from the SkyDOTdatabase.

Catalogue of Algol type binary stars
A catalogue of (411) Algol-type (semi-detached) binary stars ispresented in the form of five separate tables of information. Thecatalogue has developed from an earlier version by including more recentinformation and an improved layout. A sixth table lists (1872) candidateAlgols, about which fewer details are known at present. Some issuesrelating to the classification and interpretation of Algol-like binariesare also discussed.Catalogue is only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymousftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/417/263

Search for A-F Spectral type pulsating components in Algol-type eclipsing binary systems
We present the results of a systematic search for pulsating componentsin Algol-type eclipsing binary systems. A total number of 14 eclipsingbinaries with A-F spectral type primary components were observed for 22nights. We confirmed small-amplitude oscillating features of a recentlydetected pulsator TW Dra, which has a pulsating period of 0.053 day anda semi-amplitude of about 5 mmag in B-passband. We discovered newpulsating components in two eclipsing binaries of RX Hya and AB Per. Theprimary component of RX Hya is pulsating with a dominant period of 0.052day and a semi-amplitude of about 7 mmag. AB Per has also a pulsatingcomponent with a period of 0.196 day and a semi-amplitude of about 10mmag in B-passband. We suggest that these two new pulsators are membersof the newly introduced group of mass-accreting pulsating stars insemi-detached Algol-type eclipsing binary systems.Table 4 is only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymousftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/405/231

Archive of Photometric Plates Obtained at Cluj Astronomical Observatory
The archive of photometric plates obtained at the AstronomicalObservatory of Cluj in the period 1952-1974 is presented. The plateinventory is made within the framework of the Wide-Field Plate Databaseproject. The plates were taken in the regions around 110 variable stars(eclipsing variables and RR Lyrae-type stars), as well as in somecomparison stars regions.

Survey of Hα Mass Transfer Structures in Classical Algol-Type Binaries
Five years of Hα survey data for 37 ``classical'' Algol-typebinaries are presented. All these systems have primaries with a spectraltype of A or B, have a period of less than 5 days, and are visible inthe Northern Hemisphere. Data were collected with the 1.02 m reflectorat the US Naval Observatory, Flagstaff Station. The survey consists ofover 460 system spectra. Each system was observed at least once duringthe 5 years, with many systems observed several times over severalepochs. Difference profiles are calculated for most spectra by modelingand subtracting the spectrum of the photospheres of the stellarcomponents. We examined each spectrum for the presence of mass transfer,stream-star and stream-disk interaction, a disk or circumstellar bulge, and chromospheric emission. We present information on the prevalence ofmass transfer activity, disk presence, and system states associated withparticular mass transfer structures. We show that no currently publishedstudy, including this one, has enough data for a rigorous statisticalidentification of system states.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. The Catalogue isavailable in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/qcar?J/A+A/367/521

Stars with the Largest Hipparcos Photometric Amplitudes
A list of the 2027 stars that have the largest photometric amplitudes inHipparcos Photometry shows that most variable stars are all Miras. Thepercentage of variable types change as a function of amplitude. Thiscompilation should also be of value to photometrists looking forrelatively unstudied, but large amplitude stars.

On the multiperiodicity of the orbital period variation of ST Persei
The period variation of the Algol-type binary system ST Persei isresumed on the basis of 245 minimum light times covering a time base of91.3 yr. The multiperiodic character of its O-C curve is confirmed. Itcould be caused by the superposition of a long periodicity (67.9 yr)corresponding to the orbital motion related to an unseen companion and ashort one (23.82 yr), possibly due to cyclic magnetic activity of thesecondary component in the system. The Gaussianity of the final O-Cresiduals is investigated through tests χ2, Kolmogorovand Wilcoxon.

Photoelectric and CCD times of minima of 19 eclipsing binary systems
We present several photoelectric and unfiltered CCD minima observationsof 19 eclipsing binaries. Most of them are apsidal motion stars (or atleast candidate ones).

MSC - a catalogue of physical multiple stars
The MSC catalogue contains data on 612 physical multiple stars ofmultiplicity 3 to 7 which are hierarchical with few exceptions. Orbitalperiods, angular separations and mass ratios are estimated for eachsub-system. Orbital elements are given when available. The catalogue canbe accessed through CDS (Strasbourg). Half of the systems are within 100pc from the Sun. The comparison of the periods of close and widesub-systems reveals that there is no preferred period ratio and allpossible combinations of periods are found. The distribution of thelogarithms of short periods is bimodal, probably due to observationalselection. In 82\% of triple stars the close sub-system is related tothe primary of a wide pair. However, the analysis of mass ratiodistribution gives some support to the idea that component masses areindependently selected from the Salpeter mass function. Orbits of wideand close sub-systems are not always coplanar, although thecorresponding orbital angular momentum vectors do show a weak tendencyof alignment. Some observational programs based on the MSC aresuggested. Tables 2 and 3 are only available in electronic form at theCDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html

Interaction of Eclipsing Binaries with their Environment
The interaction of eclipsing binary star systems with the mass around(in the form of star, planet, envelope or disk) affects the orbitalperiod of these systems. Thus, the long-term orbital period changes ofeclipsing binaries which can be deduced by using the observed times ofeclipse minima provide a good tool in understanding the interaction ofeclipsing binaries with their environment. In the present contributionmany examples of the orbital period changes of different eclipsingbinaries are presented and interpreted in terms of the interaction withtheir environment.

On the invisible components of some eclipsing binaries.
The aim of this paper is to search for evidences for the presence ofunseen companions in some eclipsing binary systems using their O-Cdiagrams. A total of 8507 times of minima (6890 visual and 1617photographic or photoelectric ones) of 18 systems have been collectedfrom the remarkable database of late Dieter Lichtenknecker(Lichtenknecker 1988) and from other more recent papers. Assuming thatlight-time effect (LITE) is responsible for the periodic components onthe O-C diagrams sets of orbital parameters were derived using Kopal's(1978, Dynamics of close binary systems. D. Reidel. Co.) method. In somecases (AB And, TV Cas, XX Cep, AK Her) the resulting orbital parametersand masses of the hypothetical third components are physicallyacceptable. Other systems show good evidence for multiplicity, but theavailable data sets are not suited to compute reliable solutions (W Del,U Peg, AT Peg, ST Per). For RT And, XZ And, OO Aql, Y Cam, RS CVn, CQCep, U CrB and MR Cyg) an unambigous identification of third componentsis not possible. In the cases of TW Cas and SW Lac we could not find anyLITE solution at all.

Revised Eclipse Prediction Elements for Eight Eclipsing Binary Stars
Evaluation of recently published times of minima of eight eclipsingbinaries determined by AAVSO observers reveals significant deviationsfrom the elements listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars(GCVS). New elements for MM Cas, SW Cyg, TU Her, EQ Ori, FL Ori, TY Peg,ST Per, and BO Vul are given here.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.
