Ages, metallicities and [α/Fe] ratios of globular clusters in NGC 147, 185 and 205 We present measurements of ages, metallicities and [α/Fe] ratiosfor 16 globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 147, 185 and 205 and of thecentral regions of the diffuse galaxy light in NGC 185 and 205. Ourresults are based on spectra obtained with the SCORPIO multislitspectrograph at the 6-m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Weinclude in our analysis high-quality Hubble Space Telescope/WFPC2photometry of individual stars in the studied GCs to investigate theinfluence of their horizontal branch (HB) morphology on thespectroscopic analysis. All our sample GCs appear to be old (T > 8Gyr) and metal-poor ([Z/H] <~ -1.1), except for the GCs Hubble V inNGC 205 (T = 1.2 +/- 0.6 Gyr, [Z/H] = -0.6 +/- 0.2), Hubble VI in NGC205 (T = 4 +/- 2 Gyr, [Z/H] = -0.8 +/- 0.2) and FJJVII in NGC 185 (T = 7+/- 3 Gyr, [Z/H] = -0.8 +/- 0.2). The majority of our GCs sample hassolar [α/Fe] enhancement in contrast to the halo population of GCsin M31 and the Milky Way. The HB morphologies for our sample GCs followthe same behaviour with metallicity as younger halo Galactic GCs. Weshow that it is unlikely that they bias our spectroscopic age estimatesbased on Balmer absorption-line indices. Spectroscopic ages andmetallicities of the central regions in NGC 205 and 185 coincide withthose obtained from colour-magnitude diagrams. The central field stellarpopulations in these galaxies have approximately the same age as theirmost central GCs (Hubble V in NGC 205 and FJJIII in NGC 185), but aremore metal-rich than the central GCs.
| The Geneva-Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood. Ages, metallicities, and kinematic properties of 14 000 F and G dwarfs We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age,kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, andkinematically unbiased sample of 16 682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our63 000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13 500stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sampleand, together with published uvbyβ photometry, Hipparcosparallaxes, Tycho-2 proper motions, and a few earlier radial velocities,complete the kinematic information for 14 139 stars. These high-qualityvelocity data are supplemented by effective temperatures andmetallicities newly derived from recent and/or revised calibrations. Theremaining stars either lack Hipparcos data or have fast rotation. Amajor effort has been devoted to the determination of new isochrone agesfor all stars for which this is possible. Particular attention has beengiven to a realistic treatment of statistical biases and errorestimates, as standard techniques tend to underestimate these effectsand introduce spurious features in the age distributions. Our ages agreewell with those by Edvardsson et al. (\cite{edv93}), despite severalastrophysical and computational improvements since then. We demonstrate,however, how strong observational and theoretical biases cause thedistribution of the observed ages to be very different from that of thetrue age distribution of the sample. Among the many basic relations ofthe Galactic disk that can be reinvestigated from the data presentedhere, we revisit the metallicity distribution of the G dwarfs and theage-metallicity, age-velocity, and metallicity-velocity relations of theSolar neighbourhood. Our first results confirm the lack of metal-poor Gdwarfs relative to closed-box model predictions (the ``G dwarfproblem''), the existence of radial metallicity gradients in the disk,the small change in mean metallicity of the thin disk since itsformation and the substantial scatter in metallicity at all ages, andthe continuing kinematic heating of the thin disk with an efficiencyconsistent with that expected for a combination of spiral arms and giantmolecular clouds. Distinct features in the distribution of the Vcomponent of the space motion are extended in age and metallicity,corresponding to the effects of stochastic spiral waves rather thanclassical moving groups, and may complicate the identification ofthick-disk stars from kinematic criteria. | Radial velocities, rotations, and duplicity of a sample of early F-type dwarfs We present new radial and rotational velocities for 595 nearby early Fdwarfs, based on digital spectra cross-correlated with individuallyoptimised synthetic template spectra. The selection of optimumtemplates, the determination of rotational velocities, and theextraction of velocities from the blended spectra of double-linedspectroscopic binaries are discussed in some detail. We find 170spectroscopic binaries in the sample and determine orbits for 18double-lined and 2 single-lined binaries, including some spectroscopictriples. 73 stars are listed with too rapid rotation to yield usefulradial velocities (i.e. v sin i > 120 km~s^-1). We discuss the binaryfrequency in the sample, and the influence of unrecognised binaries onthe definition of clean metallicity groups of young F dwarfs and thedetermination of their kinematical properties. | Stroemgren photometry of F- and G-type stars brighter than V = 9.6. I. UVBY photometry Within the framework of a large photometric observing program, designedto investigate the Galaxy's structure and evolution, Hβ photometryis being made for about 9000 stars. As a by-product, supplementary uvbyphotometry has been made. The results are presented in a cataloguecontaining 6924 uvby observations of 6190 stars, all south ofδ=+38deg. The overall internal rms errors of one observation(transformed to the standard system) of a program star in the interval6.5
| Hyades and Sirius supercluster members brighter than magnitude(V) 7.1. I - The first six hours of right ascension This is the first of four papers listing the probable members of theHyades and Sirius superclusters among stars brighter than V = 7.1 mag.The star sample is contained in the Bright Star Catalogue and itsSupplement, augmented with a further supplement of 550 stars foundduring various observing programs over the past 40 years. Accurate,four-color and H-beta, or (RI), photometry is available for most of thesupercluster members. The criteria for membership are the comparisons ofthe proper motion, radial velocity, and luminosity obtained from thesupercluster parameters with the observed motions and the luminosityderived from the photometric parameters. New proper motions, based onall available catalogs, have been derived for the additional 550 starsdiscussed here, as well as for all supercluster members.
| Visual multiples. VII - MK classifications Classifications are given for 865 components of visual multiples; theyshow no systematic differences from the MK system, and the random errorsare one subclass in type and two-thirds of a luminosity class. It isfound that at least 1% of the F-type IV and V stars are weak-lined, 32%of the A4-F1 IV and V stars are Am, and 5% of the A0-A3 IV and V starsare early-type Am. Attention is called to the large fraction (55%) ofthe A3-A9 III-V stars that are of luminosity classes III or IV, unlikethe percentage (16%) at neighboring types.
